I have always loved utilizing my subconscious for actively working on my mindset, not just since studying Yoga and some NLP. Unfortunately I can’t come up with an inspiring story from my childhood to underline this, as is common in openers. Not today. Today we’ll solely look at how to change your mindset. With computers!
I have already mentioned some motivation hacks previously. This time I’d like to briefly show up some quick hacks which you can easily implement in your daily routine, given that you’re using a computer.
1. Choose Your Lock Screen Password Wisely
This time it’s not about horse battery staples and security. Eyal made me realize this, and it’s stunningly simple: If you’re like me, you enter your lock screen password at least 5 times per day. Why not utilize it for a positive affirmation? Something like “ilovemyself” or “10million$in2020” doesn’t hurt being hammered into your subconscious mind.
What’s your main goal? The answer should be your password.
Security advice: make it longer than 10 characters (e.g. a sentence). And go for various random passwords and a password manager for other logins – I’m recommending this only for your laptop’s lock screen.
2. Be Reminded of Things Randomly
One of the best things for developing a new habit is being reminded to do it at random times during the day. Not every day at 10:00, but in a random manner, so there’s no way of getting used to it.
There are endless possibilities for the habits you can build by doing so: improving your posture, bringing your main goals back into mind, drinking water, complimenting your spouse (that’s what the app suggests!), squeezing your pelvic floor muscles, smiling, being grateful…
Those are all things that make your life better. Period.
How to do that? Smart-fucking-phone! I’m using Mind Jogger for the iPhone, which allows smart scheduling and various sounds. €0.89 that I didn’t regret. For Android, Random Reminder and Alarm Roller seem to do a similar good job.
Just make sure you don’t overdo it, even though it’s tempting. If you do, you’ll become immune to it in the long run. Don’t set up too many reminders, don’t set them up too often, and take some days off. Otherwise the effect doesn’t last.
3. Your Desktop Background Matters
You can utilize your desktop in a similar manner to the way you utilize your password: use it for visualizing your goals. This can be done in a written way or in a more visual way – try out what works better for you. Mirjam likes to have a written affirmation as her wallpaper, while I prefer images.
So those bikini girls and sport cars that 14 year olds have on their desktops might not be the worst idea after all. Probably some instinct that kicks in for them 🙂
As you see, 3 out of 3 points don’t work without one thing: you need to know what you want. Apart from that they’re utterly easy to apply and will do their job more or less automatically. But if you have no idea what your goals are, they’re useless.
So even if you don’t change your password today, I hope I can motivate you at least to think about what you want to achieve in life. Suggestion: think about it in a holistic manner. 10 Million $ won’t make you happy if you’re a miserable person. Therefore approach it from various aspects: physical/material, energetical, emotional as well as spiritual.
